The stories of our lives
Bytemarks #50 - September 3, 1999

The art of communicating is by no means unique to humans, yet we have evolved it like no other on this planet.

Steph (aka kiheigirl) recently turned me on to the world of on-line journals and diaries. With all the personal websites on the net, it seems pretty obvious to me that many would use the medium to post their diaries. Well, maybe not so obvious. Diaries tend to be extremely personal, a dialog between yourself and your -- Self. To put it out there for all to see and judge is intriguing to me. Going online involves a dose of honesty and a bit of narcissism. What a combination!

Enough of my personal pondering. The fact of the matter is they're out there for all of us to read, enjoy, share and question. For starters go to www.diarist.net. The Diarist is a perfect launching point for those interested in reading a diary and those interested in registering their diary. The staff of the Diarist, and there's an extensive list of these - link wranglers, scour the web for tales of the real world.

A quick scan of the diary sites in Hawai`i came up with 29. The Diarist lists over a thousand sites around the world. The best diary sites read like a personal life drama. A few recommended sites include; "Mirror Mirror" by Sarah Bruner at www.syrup.org/mirror/, "In Medias Res" by Ryan Ozawa at www.lightfantastic.org/imr/ and "The Pantherís Tale" by the infamous Albert the Panther at www.nahenahe.net/panther/. Let me tell you, this is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. So like anything worthwhile, given a little time, this stuff will grow on you.

An added note, the Diarist site is much more that a link to online diaries. It appeals to the innate storyteller in all of us. The site provides an online guide for anyone interested in writing and maintaining their own online journal. And as far as the Diarist is concern, if you are not an escribitionist, youíre a voyeur. ;-)
