Adze Workshop at Pu`u Moiwi

| Near the center of the island is Pu`u Moiwi. This area was once used extensively as an adze workshop. The quiet remains of this activity is clearly visible at Pu`u Moiwi where a large area of basalt flakes can still be found. It is at this location that adze-makers used water-rounded stones known as hammer stones to chip away at the basalt. Chips of desired shape and size were saved and polished for tool making. The adze quarry at Pu`u Moiwi is one of the largest in Hawai`i, second only to those found on the island of Hawai`i. |
