The Jellyfish of Jellyfish Lake

One of the major attractions during the boat tour of the Rock Islands is a dip in Jellyfish Lake. The lake is a completely land locked salt water lake, trapping the jellyfish that live there. They have as a result lost their ability to sting.

During the course of the day the jellyfish follow the the cycle of the sun. When the sun is the brightest over the lake, the jellyfish head toward the surface to harness the sun's energy. During the evening hours they cycle back into the lower depths of the lake.

As you might imagine, the lake is a fragile ecosystem. Visitors are allowed to swim with the jellyfish but it is recommended that you do not use fins and swim slowly and carefully as to not disturb the jellyfish. It is amazing to watch them pulsing right in front of your mask.
