Stone money of YapWhat you see in the background is an actual Yapese coin. The people from Yap, historically quarried these huge stones from sites around Palau. Composed of crystalline limestone, the stone was carved into circular disks. They were then transported to Yap by way of canoe more than 200 miles away. The value of the coins were based on the size and relative difficulty to transport back to Yap. The coin you see is still on Palau and never made the journey to Yap. My guess is while moving this coin from the quarry area it was broken. There is a chip cracked off in the upper left hand side, thus devaluing the coin. Whoever order this coin quarried probably would not be too happy to receive damaged goods, so the workers abandoned it on Palau.
